The Masters; The History

6 April 2012

When you think of professional golf, you think of four major championships and yesterday saw one of best get underway. The Masters is the first Major of the year and is held annually at Augusta National Golf Course, a legend in itself. Started by Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones in 1934 there are many traditions that have followed through into the modern game; none more so than the famous Green Jacket which has been awarded to winners of The Masters since 1949.

Over the years The Masters have played host to the biggest and best names in professional golf. At Caddyshack Rentals we were taking a nostalgic look back through the records and came across a few tidbits of info for you. Did you know, for example, that Jack Nicklaus has won The Masters more times than any other player? With a total of 6 wins he triumphs over Tiger Woods (four victories) who most people associate with multiple wins at The Masters. Our favourite bit of quizzing info for you is that our dear own Gary Player, from South Africa, was the first non-American player to win the tournament back in 1961.

Continuing to do South Africa proud, last years winner Charl Schwartzel will be returning to defend his Masters title. He is joined by 2 other South Africans, Tim Clark and last weeks Shell Houston Open runner-up Louis Oosthuizen. They face some stiff competition and one thing’s for sure, we’re guaranteed to be in for a fantastic four days of golf. Come back next week for Caddyshack Rentals comprehensive review of the tournaments play and of course, the all important results!
