The Global Golf Boom

23 March 2012

“You are out in the open air, you are playing against yourself, and the handicap system allows you to compete across every skill level. It’s the one game you can play when you’re 5 or 85”. These are the words of golf’s global ambassador, Gary Player. Famously being just one of five players to win a Career Grand Slam, he certainly knows his stuff. Following his illustrative career as a player, Gary moved into  golf course design and to date has designed over 300 courses around the world.

The game has changed significantly in recent times; gone are the stuffy connotations, the typical 40-50yr old male demographic and the bankrupting green fees. With the introduction of new blood and younger stars like Rory Mcllroy there are growing numbers of youngsters taking up the sport. The other dramatic change is the percentage of women who are now enjoying a round or two rather than waiting for hubby to finish his. The concept of pay to play instead of annual membership fees  is also offering new players a cheaper alternative to enjoying what has previously been considered one of the most expensive sports to enjoy.

One could even say it’s becoming more of a family sport. As Gary alluded to, there is no age restrictions on golf, anyone and everyone can enjoy the game.
