South Africa and wine; a match made in heaven

30 July 2012

As well being famous for its stunning scenery, beautiful beaches and glorious golf courses, South Africa, specifically the Western Cape, is also renowned for producing world class wines. Since Jan van Riebeeck planted the first grapes back in 1655, vines have spread across the hills of the Cape. Today, wine is big business in South Africa with vineyards comprising of over 60 Wine of Origin regions.

The Cape Winelands are made up of several regions, all of which offer their own tours and wine route. The nearest of these to Cape Town is Stellenbosch, which is also home to the famous Stellenbosch Golf Club.

To make the most of your Cape Winelands experience we recommend hiring a car through our partners Tempest Car Hire or UVS who offer specialised golfing vehicles so you can spend a couple of days exploring all four main regions, which as well as Stellenbosch also includes Franschhoek, Wellington, and Paarl.

Numerous wine tours are available, to suit any budget, making them a firm favourite with Cape Tourism and visitors to South Africa. For more information visit the Cape Tourism website.
