Pro Golfers: Gary Player Profile

27 July 2012

At Caddyshack Rentals we like to take time out to take a closer look at some of the greatest pro golfers, new and old, who’ve had an impact on our glorious game. South Africa, home of Caddyshack Rentals, has always been blessed with outstanding golfing talent; having looked at the careers of both Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel it’s now time to turn our attention to a few facts about one of the greatest players in golfing history, South African, Gary Player.

During his career Gary Player accumulated a staggering nine major championships on the regular tour and six Champions Tour major championship victories, as well as three Senior British Open Championships on the European Senior Tour. At the age of just 29, Gary won the 1965 US Open to become the only non-American to win the career Grand Slam; being one of just five pro golfers to ever achieve this feat.

Gary Player is one of the most successful pro golfers in the history of the sport, ranking third in total professional wins, with at least 166 – He has more victories than anyone else in the South African Open (13) and the Australian Open (7) and he held the record for the most victories in the World Match Play Championship (5) from 1973 until 1991. He was the only player in the 20th century to win the British Open in three different decades and in 1974, he became one of the few golfers in history to win two major championships in the same season.

Not content with breaking records on the green Gary turned his hand to designing them, becoming a renowned golf course architect with more than 325 design projects on 5 continents throughout the world. With 36 books also under his belt this International Ambassador of Golf has most certainly made his mark on the game; it’s no surprise this boy from South Africa was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.
