Player Profile – Rory Mcllroy (amateur days)

28 March 2012

From time to time, here at Caddyshack Rentals, we’re going to take a closer look at some golfing stars, past and present, and today we turn to Rory McIlroy and where it all started…

Born in 1989 to Gerry and Rosie, it was clear from a young age that golf was always going to be part of Rory’s life. Gerry, a fine golfer himself, started training Rory at just 18 months old and by the age of 2 he was hitting a 40 yard drive! His amateur career started early and Rory claimed his first significant international victory at the World Championships for the 9–10 age group.. By 15 he was on the winning 2004 Junior Ryder Cup team and showed no sign of slowing down. By the age of 16 he had became the youngest-ever winner of both the West of Ireland Championship and the Irish Close Championship, retained the West of Ireland Championship the following year, secured back-to-back wins at the Irish Close Championship and won the European Amateur! In 2007 he made the cut on the European Tour for the first time as a 17-year-old but sadly he had to forego prize money of over €7,600 due to his amateur status!

2006 was a busy year for Rory and it was only going to get busier. As we leave his amateur days behind us come back tomorrow as we delve into his professional career and the Rory we know today….
